Many of the dinosaur names you know and love like Tyrannosaurus and Velociraptor are actually the genus or genre. Their species names are T. rex and V. mongoliensis.

New fossil gastropod shells to add to the collection! They are from the Pleistocene epoch "last ice age(s)" of Florida.

I love having modern sea shells, plus fossil shells from the Paleozoic era (before dinosaurs), Mesozoic era (with dinosaurs), and Cenozoic (after dinosaurs) for comparisons!

I will be teaching with these for the rest of my life!

Brachiopods are one of the most abundant fossils o

Brachiopods are one of the most abundant fossils of the Paleozoic (before the dinosaurs) and can be found all over the world. Few species have survived to today.

Despite their appearance, they are not closely related to clams. This is an example of convergent evolution, where two different organisms have similar features (in this case two shells) to survive in similar environments.

Fun fact: Clams are more closely related to snails and squids than they are to brachiopods!
